This was our first competitive competition, after two and a half years of development football and we were really looking forward to it. After a successful group stage we secured our place in the final. We then had a few weeks waiting in suspense to see who our opponents would be. Then we found out it would be Junior Shots Blue, we knew it was going to be a tough game as we’ve played them many times before and it could go either way.

With the final approaching I’m sure I was feeling the pressure far more than the boys! With a 9am kick off at least Paul and I didn’t have much time to think about what might happen. The Kestrels were all excited and raring to go, as were the opponents.
As expected the game started with both teams playing some great football. The Junior Shots took the lead during the first half with a well headed goal from a corner. The Kestrels then showed their character by battling back to make it 1-1 at half time.
The whole of the second half saw some great football from both teams, bringing some brilliant saves from both goal keepers. As it was 1-1 the game went into extra time. With everyone feeling the pressure we just told the boys to keep playing the football they’re capable of and if we get a chance, hit the target.

With only a couple of minutes to go in the second half of extra time and penalties looming the boys created a chance and hit the target scoring the goal that everyone cheering on Mytchett was hoping for.

The final whistle was blown with a great 2-1 win after extra time for Mytchett Athletic Kestrels. We always encourage the Kestrels to play as a team, I think that’s what has given them success today.

Paul and I are so proud of our team they’re an absolute pleasure to be around and always give their best. Well done to all the boys you should be very proud of yourselves.

I’d like to thank all the family and friends that came to support our team. I hope you enjoyed it as much as Paul and I.

I didn’t let the emotions get to me at all Ha ha.

  • A fantastic result for the boys and well deserved for all their efforts and commitment. A great turn out from friends and family to witness a great game. Loved Andy’s thirty second speech after the game before the emotions kicked in, just goes to show how much this all means to all of us. Many thanks to all Mytchett supporters for their great support.
