U10’s League Cup Final Day! Camberley Town Raiders v Mytchett Athletic Kestrels. The biggest day for myself, Paul and our Kestrels to date. With my stomach turning all morning l couldn’t bear the thought of eating anything I turned up at the venue only to be greeted by the most relaxed looking Kestrels. If they were feeling nervous they weren’t showing it! In the words of Matthew Conlon ‘Kids football……..it really gets to you’! Oh how true that is!

With match preparations done and pre-match talk over the boys took to the pitch in confident mood. Both teams playing some great football and end to end stuff, with chances going both ways and the first half being eventful in the physical sense but neither team able to break the deadlock the first half ended goalless.

After a halftime chat and changing a few positions it was back to the field for the second half! We restarted well and looked like the changes could have made a difference, it wasn’t long before the first was scored, unfortunately it wasn’t in our favour as a great strike was met by an equally good save just a shame it fell at the feet of a Camberley Town player only to slot home from a couple of yards! 1-0 down with an uphill task ahead the Kestrels had to regroup, get their heads together and get themselves back into the game. In games gone by they have proved they are more than capable of coming from behind and they dug very deep and worked tirelessly to do just that, making plenty of chances just unable to finish them. The only trouble pushing so hard going forward they left themselves open for the counter attack which happened on a number of occasions but with great defensive and keeping they were able press hard and defend well and their concentration never faltered! With time running out and it looking like it wasn’t going to happen we struck with a well finished goal that sent myself and the ever increasing support for the boys into hysteria! 1-1 and still time to win it, but try as they did it was inevitable the game was going to end at 1-1 and go to extra time!

Another quick chat and a little tinker it was back out for extra time. The boys were in buoyant mood after their equaliser and with their heads up they were confident they could nick a quick goal and pile the pressure on the Raiders. And that’s exactly what they did, some great football from the Kestrels got them into a position where with some great footwork around a couple of players and the calmness of a player twice their age the ball was buried again sending all our supporters over the edge! 2-1 up and at last the advantage swung our way! It wasn’t much longer before the end of the first period of extra time!

Another change and back to it, although our boys were looking tired with all the effort they had put in not only to get back into the game but to have the lead they were in no mood to give it up!
With what seemed like an age, the ball going from end to end and chances going begging for both teams I was constantly being asked ‘how much longer?’ from our subs who were struggling to watch, eventually it came………..the final whistle! What then ensued was relief, joy and tbh sweet revenge on the team that knocked us out of both cups last season!

I’m the proudest manager/coach and dad and I can’t speak highly enough of our boys and the effort they have put in to win the first of hopefully many more trophies.

Thank you to the family, friends, coaches and players from our age group that turned up today to support the Kestrels. It really was appreciated and hope you enjoyed what turned out to be very eventful game.
