Respect Award – John Davies
On this rather wet morning the Mytchett Athletic Old Boys headed up the A3 to Raynes Park for a FDSL Charity Cup match against Old Wimbledonians.
Thankfully at kick off the rain had stopped and surrounded by rugby matches (a ground share with Wimbledon Warriors) the game began.
Old Wimbledonians deservedly took the lead as Mytchett found it hard to adjust to the pitch which was very long and narrow, and the home team’s midfield had the upper hand.
Just before half time a free kick was awarded to Mytchett and Tom Donoghue’s delivery from the half way line caught their keeper out and Carl Swain poached and equaliser.
The second half was a far more equal match and Old Wimbledonians retook the lead after 58 minutes.
A goal kick in the 75th minute by Mytchett sadly fell to the opposition who put the home team 3-1 up.
Then followed a long period of sustained pressure by Mytchett that was rewarded in the 85th minute with a goal for Darren Hurn (3-2).
Despite Mytchett throwing players forward the opposition managed to hold on for the win.
